I ordered a new F5914-900 Hoover SteamVac. I noticed when I opened the box that it didn’t seem to be packaged properly – loose items, etc. It was in the right box but it just wasn’t right. When I put the handle and other pieces together I could see worn parts – slots scraped and worn. It was fairly clean as if it had been wiped down but I also thought the bristles looked frayed. I decided to go ahead and try it. When I opened the detergent cup to fill it the rubber seal was dirty and had hard water deposits on it. I had a room all cleaned out, vacuumed and ready to clean so I went ahead and assembled everything. Made several “wet” passes – dry as a bone. I followed all directions to the “T”. The only way I could get solution onto the carpet was to hold down the Clean Surge button while depressing the button for the regular cleaning function. It took two thumbs to hold down the Clean Surge while I pulled the trigger for the regular clean function with index finger. It did pull the solution out well when I made dry passes. It’s obvious that this was returned by someone else as defective and passed on to me. I just called Amazon and they apologized and are sending out a new machine immediately. They said that there are “occasional mix-ups in the warehouse with used and new items”. I gave it two stars for Amazon’s quick handling of the problem.
Hopefully I can do a follow up post when I get the new machine. Check your machine carefully when you unpack and assemble it.

11/1/2010 – Update – received the new machine in two days. What a difference. The new machine was dropped off and the old one picked up at the same time. There was a visible difference in the two boxes. The first box was obviously older and worn looking. The second machine works well. No problem with the regular cleaning function. I was very pleased with Amazon’s quick response to the error/problem.

So far this card is working as advertised. At this point I would be happy to recommend this card to anyone in my family or any of my friends. If you choose to purchase this card, I hope you have as good of an experience as I have had. Do something nice for someone today and tell them to pay it forward.

Bought this card for a Panasonic ZS7 camera and have had no problems. The card works just as well as two other memory cards I have of different brands. I like the capacity of this card and don’t think I’ll have to worry about filling it up. This has happened to me with 4gb cards.

***SPOILER ALERT***
Put this novel on the FUN READ shelf. Definitely nothing mind-blowing in terms of plot or prose but a very entertaining look at depression era circus life.
The author alternates (for the most part) chapters between Jacob’s life during the depression and his life as a 90 year old in a nursing home. One gets the sense that the author seeks to evoke some sympathy for the 90 year Jacob’s plight. In this endeavor she fails as she never fully fleshes out his relationship with his children. Thus the reader is left feeling slightly apathetic as to his plight as a lonely and ornery old man wasting away in a assisted living facility.
Finally, the ending is a bit contrived and convenient. The frail old Jacob making a break for it out of the retirement home and going to the circus event that is in town. There of course he meets and befriends one of the circus directors who spirits him away on their cross country tour. Happily ever blah blah blah.
All of this is not to discourage someone from reading this novel. The author can write with rhythm and keeps the pacing light and quick. Viewing the novel as a love story, the author is adept at capturing the dual emotional nature of love with phrases like: “exhausted and recharged, desperate and fulfilled.” With a good writer, this book would make a great movie.

I looked everywhere for this and was so happy when I found it here on Amazon. It’s nice to revisit an old favorite while driving down the road, giving me a great alternative to the garbage that’s on the radio. It was a little expensive but it is worth it for this hard to find gem.

I bought this about a year ago, and I LOVE it. It was easy to put together. It does an awesome job, the first time my carpet was SUPER clean. There is not a stain this machine will not clean up. Without this our carpets would look gross (we have a 2 year old mess maker).
